PPWR: assess the requirements for each packaging application
The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (EU) 2025/40 applies in stages from 12 August 2026. Requirements concerning recyclability, recycled content and reuse have their own application dates, conditions and exceptions. A general statement that packaging must be “recyclable or reusable” does not describe these requirements adequately.
Check the packaging and its intended use
For automotive components, start by recording the packaging format, materials, inserts, coatings, intended use and transport route. Establish the role of each company involved and identify which requirements apply to that particular packaging. Reusability alone is not evidence that every PPWR requirement has been met.
Assess recyclability in context
A material name or a single-material design does not by itself demonstrate that a finished packaging unit can be recycled. Consider its complete composition, separability, contamination and the collection, sorting and recycling routes available for the intended market. Applicable assessment criteria and supporting documentation must be checked for the specific configuration.
Plan development and verification
OEMs and suppliers can use this assessment to define development work, material specifications and the documents required from their packaging partners. For reusable systems, also plan returns, inspection, cleaning and replacement. Costs and any environmental effects need a separate assessment of the actual logistics process.
